Butcher's Field

Image of children playingButcher's Field Open Space lies behind Great Glemham Village Hall, and is reached via a footbridge at the back of the car park. It's a place for everyone in the community to enjoy. There are now swings, a trim trail and picnic tables on the field, and exciting plans for a video project and willow tunnel planting soon.

The field was opened to the public in Spring 2010, as part of the Higher level Stewardship scheme operated by Great Glemham Farms. That first summer access was by Street Farm Drive, until the footbridge was erected in September 2010. During the winter lots of people helped to plant hedges and trees at two very successful work parties. In March 2011 the small willow dome was planted, and in April we celebrated with a Royal Wedding Barbecue on the field.

During 2012 there were two more work parties, an Easter egg hunt, a picnic and finally the construction of an insect house in October. Behind the scenes the Friends of Butcher's Field group was formed and they worked hard to secure funding from the Community Spaces (Big Lottery) Fund. More negotiation was needed to secure planning permission, but early in 2013 the swings, trim trail and picnic tables were installed and are now being put to good use.
